Narrative:

I had flown all night to iad, laid over, flew back to ZZZ, landed, got home into bed around XA00 saturday, got up XG00 to see son off to work. Got to bed XO00, laid awake until the crew desk called at XY00. Was told that my rest was being adjusted and I was given an all night trip for the next night, flying into my day off. Laid awake until XC45 worrying about fatigue issues and not being able to fall asleep due to anxiety. Called the crew desk and asked her to take me off the trip as I was unable to fall asleep and was worried about fatigue issues. I knew that my family would be up around XG00, and it was a non school/work day so they would be home all day (not good for napping). Crew scheduling advised me that I was the only captain available. I told her that my job was to be rested prior to flight and I felt that getting proper rest was not going to happen. She pressed me as to when I would be able to fly, it was difficult to predict at XC45, and frustrating to even try to answer. I decided to err on the safe side and asked for 24 hours. She said, fine we would 'hold the departure until XC45 tomorrow.' at that point I said 'fine XF00,' so I was put on unpaid status until XF00 monday morning. I feel badly that we do not have enough pilots, that the crew desk has to change our rest periods to cover trips. I am not a robot, however. I cannot fall asleep and sleep through the night when I have had to be up late the prior 2 nights. I will not work fatigued.
