Narrative:

I was cleared for takeoff from mcgee-tyson airport on runway 5R. There was an airplane that departed before me and I was supposed to follow him in a turn to the left. We were both going to nashville, tn. Then knoxville departure gave me some TA's. I was instructed to fly straight out. I didn't understand that there would be a tanker taking off from runway 5L. I began a slow left turn to follow preceeding traffic and then the tanker flew under me. I immediately knew I was in the wrong. ATC corrected my heading, leveled me off at 2500 ft MSL, then eventually vectored me to nashville international. The confusion began when I misunderstood the position of the traffic that knoxville departure advised me of. I learned to question ATC when in doubt of the situation. I have since been issued a letter of warning from the FAA, and as far as I know, no action will be taken against my pilot certificate.
