Narrative:

Crew arrived at about 10 mins before scheduled departure. First officer did walkaround while captain prepared cockpit and started paperwork. Crew ran origination checklist and before checklists. Captain noticed gear pins behind seat during checklist and thought all 4 were there. After pushback complete, and while ramper was disconnecting, he informed crew that a red flag was visible in nosewheel well. Crew looked at gear pins again and shuffled the red flags around and noticed then only 3 pins were on board. First officer stated that the gear pins were not installed in the gear. I asked if the 4TH pin was installed and he was unsure maintenance was called to remove pin and flight departed.
