Narrative:

We were on the flunk 3 arrival, 20 mi east of tenco fix descending to 12000 ft when ZOA advised us of VFR traffic at 12 O'clock position climbing to 11000 ft. As we leveled off at 12000 ft we watched the traffic approaching us on TCASII. We received a TA alert followed by an RA as the target aircraft continued its climb to at least 11700 ft. We initiated a climb maneuver as instructed by the TCASII RA up to approximately 12900 ft before getting a 'clear of conflict' command from the TCASII. We immediately notified ZOA who then handed us over to norcal approach control for approach and landing at smf. Descent and approach checklist had been completed with the proper altimeter set as per the ATIS.
