Narrative:

Previous day was long with lots of WX resulting in late arrival. Early get up next morning at XA00 body time. Prior to taxi, ATIS had runway 28 closed and departure 33L, so my mindset was route to runway 33L. At taxi, ground gave us taxi runway 28 which would take us to taxiway east with left turn on taxiway P. As I approached P, I'm still thinking about runway 33L route, went straight ahead, taking me to taxiway P/runway 28 intersection. Even though, I was thinking of runway 33L route, I knew I was going to runway 28. The intersection I thought I was at was the taxiway P/runway 22 intersection. This was confirmed in my mind by another aircraft that was in reality about to taxi on runway 28 but in my mind looked as if he was at taxiway bravo crossing runway 22. The spatial relationship looked correct. As I crossed hold line at taxiway east/runway 28, ground told me to stop. We were past the hold line but short of runway 28. Ground instructed us to taxi clear, gave us instructions to runway 28 and remainder of flight uneventful. In hindsight, we obviously need to do better at monitoring our position on the ground. At the time I thought we were doing it right. Some airports, by their design and operation, are traps waiting to be sprung. At airports such as bwi where there are multiple intxns of txwys and runways, specific clearance should be given to cross each runway. Otherwise try as we might, mistakes are going to be made.

Title: A B737-800 CAPT, WHILE TAXIING AT BWI, HAS RWY INCURSION ON RWY 28 AT TXWY E.

Narrative: PREVIOUS DAY WAS LONG WITH LOTS OF WX RESULTING IN LATE ARR. EARLY GET UP NEXT MORNING AT XA00 BODY TIME. PRIOR TO TAXI, ATIS HAD RWY 28 CLOSED AND DEP 33L, SO MY MINDSET WAS RTE TO RWY 33L. AT TAXI, GND GAVE US TAXI RWY 28 WHICH WOULD TAKE US TO TXWY E WITH L TURN ON TXWY P. AS I APPROACHED P, I'M STILL THINKING ABOUT RWY 33L RTE, WENT STRAIGHT AHEAD, TAKING ME TO TXWY P/RWY 28 INTXN. EVEN THOUGH, I WAS THINKING OF RWY 33L RTE, I KNEW I WAS GOING TO RWY 28. THE INTERSECTION I THOUGHT I WAS AT WAS THE TXWY P/RWY 22 INTXN. THIS WAS CONFIRMED IN MY MIND BY ANOTHER ACFT THAT WAS IN REALITY ABOUT TO TAXI ON RWY 28 BUT IN MY MIND LOOKED AS IF HE WAS AT TXWY BRAVO XING RWY 22. THE SPATIAL RELATIONSHIP LOOKED CORRECT. AS I CROSSED HOLD LINE AT TXWY E/RWY 28, GND TOLD ME TO STOP. WE WERE PAST THE HOLD LINE BUT SHORT OF RWY 28. GND INSTRUCTED US TO TAXI CLR, GAVE US INSTRUCTIONS TO RWY 28 AND REMAINDER OF FLT UNEVENTFUL. IN HINDSIGHT, WE OBVIOUSLY NEED TO DO BETTER AT MONITORING OUR POS ON THE GND. AT THE TIME I THOUGHT WE WERE DOING IT RIGHT. SOME ARPTS, BY THEIR DESIGN AND OP, ARE TRAPS WAITING TO BE SPRUNG. AT ARPTS SUCH AS BWI WHERE THERE ARE MULTIPLE INTXNS OF TXWYS AND RWYS, SPECIFIC CLRNC SHOULD BE GIVEN TO CROSS EACH RWY. OTHERWISE TRY AS WE MIGHT, MISTAKES ARE GOING TO BE MADE.
