Narrative:

Flight mke to msn. During climb, captain noticed left oil temperature gauge spiked over 170 degrees celsius -- redline is 158 degrees celsius. All other engine parameters were normal. Crew executed all normal and abnormal checklists for high oil temperature. It instructed us to shut down engine after 15 mins if red line was exceeded. Dispatch and maintenance were called to confer and amend release. Returned to mke prior to 15 min limit and landed without further problems. Crash fire rescue equipment was called out as a precautionary measure. Aircraft arrived at gate safely without further problems. Maintenance fixed the problem. Found that there was an oil temperature sending unit that had a broken ground wire that was causing the faulty indications. Aircraft returned to service. Supplemental information from acn 552558: after talking with company maintenance and dispatch, it was decided that we could return to mke and land prior to the 15 min limit. The landing was uneventful and we complied with all emergency and normal checklists.
