Narrative:

Shortly after takeoff, flight attendant in rear of aircraft reported an unusual vibration in floor of aft galley. As we had just made a high gross weight/high speed takeoff we suspected it might be related to that and advised her to keep us advised. A few mins later she advised that the vibration was persisting and felt like a 'buzz.' we leveled at 15000 ft and the first officer went aft to check on the situation. Flight attendant advised first officer that the vibration had decreased with engine power reduction, but the first officer could still feel it in the floor and the galley walls. We conferred with our dispatch and maintenance control and agreed to return to our departure point (mke). As we were well over landing weight and since all indications in the cockpit were normal, we elected to burn down our fuel and entered a hold at msn. After approximately 1 hour holding, we proceeded to mke and made a normal landing. Aircraft and engines were examined by our maintenance who advised the vibration was coming from the #1 engine but that it was 'within tolerances.' the engine is a JT8D-219.

Title: MD80 FLT ATTENDANT CALLED THE CREW TO INFORM THEM OF EXCESSIVE VIBRATION IN THE AFT GALLEY FLOOR AREA.

Narrative: SHORTLY AFTER TKOF, FLT ATTENDANT IN REAR OF ACFT RPTED AN UNUSUAL VIBRATION IN FLOOR OF AFT GALLEY. AS WE HAD JUST MADE A HIGH GROSS WT/HIGH SPD TKOF WE SUSPECTED IT MIGHT BE RELATED TO THAT AND ADVISED HER TO KEEP US ADVISED. A FEW MINS LATER SHE ADVISED THAT THE VIBRATION WAS PERSISTING AND FELT LIKE A 'BUZZ.' WE LEVELED AT 15000 FT AND THE FO WENT AFT TO CHK ON THE SIT. FLT ATTENDANT ADVISED FO THAT THE VIBRATION HAD DECREASED WITH ENG PWR REDUCTION, BUT THE FO COULD STILL FEEL IT IN THE FLOOR AND THE GALLEY WALLS. WE CONFERRED WITH OUR DISPATCH AND MAINT CTL AND AGREED TO RETURN TO OUR DEP POINT (MKE). AS WE WERE WELL OVER LNDG WT AND SINCE ALL INDICATIONS IN THE COCKPIT WERE NORMAL, WE ELECTED TO BURN DOWN OUR FUEL AND ENTERED A HOLD AT MSN. AFTER APPROX 1 HR HOLDING, WE PROCEEDED TO MKE AND MADE A NORMAL LNDG. ACFT AND ENGS WERE EXAMINED BY OUR MAINT WHO ADVISED THE VIBRATION WAS COMING FROM THE #1 ENG BUT THAT IT WAS 'WITHIN TOLERANCES.' THE ENG IS A JT8D-219.
