Narrative:

El paso ground cleared us to taxi to runway 26L. I proceeded to start taxiing to runway 22 in error on taxiway J. It was not until we were in the runway 8R/26L stopway on taxiway J when ground notified us we were taxiing to the incorrect runway. An immediate right turn was initiated to join taxiway left for runway 26L. However, I violated the statement on el paso which says, do not taxi onto runway 8R stopway without clearance. Fortunately, no conflict occurred for wy 26L arrs or departures. El paso airport offers many confusing txwys at the southwest corner of the field. Strict diligence is needed to avoid error. Although I had been to el paso many times, my mind told me we were going the right way to the assigned runway.
