Narrative:

During pushback off the gate at aus, an MD80 taxied between us and the terminal eastbound. I have several concerns. First, his right wingtip was no more than 20 ft from the nose of my aircraft. Second, I estimate his speed to be approximately 10-15 KTS. His proximity was very disconcerting and most unexpected. I don't know about the other company, but our operations specifications state 'do not taxi between a gate and an aircraft under pushback unless this practice is approved per instructions on the airport information page.' this practice is not approved on our page. I asked the tug driver, who was also taken back, and she had never had this occur before. This aircraft was not on a taxi line. ATC ground stated the ramp was uncontrolled. I feel the flight's action was reckless. As we taxied out we heard that he had a wheels up time. I believe he was hurrying to make his time. Lesson, never assume you know what the other guy might do and don't assume others operate under the same operations specifications as you.
