Narrative:

We were level at 1500 ft looking for ssi, with the local approach control. Immediately, my partner, the PF began a quick nose-down descent, and pointed out a cessna at our altitude approaching from our left side. If we had not descended when we did, it would have resulted in a midair collision. At once, as we cleared the traffic, I informed ATC of our action and why. ATC responded they still had no target, even after we explained location of traffic and our deviation of a few hundred ft below our assigned altitude. (That was all we had time to descend.) we had no indication that ATC considered our action a problem. I submit this report as a precaution.
