Narrative:

The aircraft took off without air conditioning packs on. Climbing to approximately 14000 ft, cleared to FL180, the cabin altitude horn came on. The crew noticed packs were not on and switched them on, donning oxygen masks. Asked ATC for descent to 10000 ft. Crew followed up with cabin pressurization checklist. Cleared to 11000 ft, then 10000 ft. After re-establishing cabin pressure, requested higher altitude, cleared to 12000 ft. The problem arose due to the crew not catching error in the after start and climb checklist. The crew was well rested and not rushed. We held off runway, 5 mins prior to takeoff while airport conducted runway search for a reported bird. The first officer had been out of the cockpit for over 60 days prior to starting this rotation and was the first leg as PNF.
