Narrative:

When we checked on with ord approach, they offered us to deviate for WX as we desired, and reported moderate to severe turbulence was reported 5 mi ahead. We deviated left of course (northwest) around a cell on radar when we got the r-hand engine fire warning. The 25 min flight from spi had almost continuous light turbulence with occasional moderate turbulence. We were in light turbulence at the time. I initiated the engine fire memory items and the first officer and I completed them to the point of going to the checklist, the fire warning remained after discharging 1 fire bottle. The checklist commands the second bottle. The checklist is kept in our personal manuals, not in an aircraft book as is probably normal. During the time it took the first officer to get out his checklist (30 seconds), the warning went out. Also during this 'dead time' I informed ATC declaring the emergency, in case we needed to quickly come in to land. We ran the checklist and talked to company dispatch, then ATC informed us of severe turbulence and windshear reports at ord. Rfd was the nearest airport, but with the en route WX as it was, turbulence and heavy rain, I was hesitant to go there -- especially knowing that there is no airline service at rfd, and I would have to baby-situation passenger for who knows how long. Dispatch read us the sequence reports for several airports and I decided msn was my most comfortable option. I've been there many times, and it was good VFR. This may not have been the best 'by the book' far correct alternate, but I was most comfortable landing single engine there, rather than flying into WX that doesn't paint well on radar and may be deteriorating. I briefed the first officer en route that I was suspicious that the fire warning was erroneous and we could restart the r-hand engine if there was trouble with the left. We talked to maintenance control and consulted the flight attendant. She didn't see or hear anything out of the ordinary, and gave a short briefing to the passenger (first officer). Total time on a single engine was 20-25 mins. Landing at msn uneventful.

RFD WAS THE NEAREST ARPT, BUT WITH THE ENRTE WX AS IT WAS, TURB AND HVY RAIN, I WAS HESITANT TO GO THERE -- ESPECIALLY KNOWING THAT THERE IS NO AIRLINE SVC AT RFD, AND I WOULD HAVE TO BABY-SIT PAX FOR WHO KNOWS HOW LONG. DISPATCH READ US THE SEQUENCE RPTS FOR SEVERAL ARPTS AND I DECIDED MSN WAS MY MOST COMFORTABLE OPTION. I'VE BEEN THERE MANY TIMES, AND IT WAS GOOD VFR. THIS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN THE BEST 'BY THE BOOK' FAR CORRECT ALTERNATE, BUT I WAS MOST COMFORTABLE LNDG SINGLE ENG THERE, RATHER THAN FLYING INTO WX THAT DOESN'T PAINT WELL ON RADAR AND MAY BE DETERIORATING. I BRIEFED THE FO ENRTE THAT I WAS SUSPICIOUS THAT THE FIRE WARNING WAS ERRONEOUS AND WE COULD RESTART THE R-HAND ENG IF THERE WAS TROUBLE WITH THE L. WE TALKED TO MAINT CTL AND CONSULTED THE FLT ATTENDANT. SHE DIDN'T SEE OR HEAR ANYTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY, AND GAVE A SHORT BRIEFING TO THE PAX (FO). TOTAL TIME ON A SINGLE ENG WAS 20-25 MINS. LNDG AT MSN UNEVENTFUL.
