Narrative:

Departed gso en route to pit on IFR flight plan. Pit was VMC. En route, ZDC advised us to slow to anticipate a hold. ZOB later advised us to hold southeast of pleez intersection at FL210 and gave an efc. Although captain was PF, he asked me to fly while he attempted to contact flight control for alternate and concurrence with bug out fuel. Captain put hold in FMS and I concurred. Hold was entered and after a while, ATC asked if we missed the hold. Entry was reported and ATC advised they wanted us holding east of a radial. To prevent sits such as this, specific holding instructions could be given or merely hold 'as published.'
