Narrative:

During the approach into kansas city downtown airport, while being vectored, clearance to descend was given and acknowledged. New altitude was set in altitude preselect. Autoplt was engaged during the entire flight. 1000 ft call was made prior to reaching assigned altitude. Other cockpit duties were being performed in anticipation of landing. However, neither the PIC (who was also the PF) nor I noticed that the autoplt did not capture the assigned altitude until we received further descent clearance.
