Narrative:
Flight crew contacted me en route to bna. They notified me that the #1 system 'a' hydraulic pump low pressure light was inoperative and that they were looking at MEL reference 29-00-xx and wanted to flight crew placard the item. I reviewed the MEL reference and issued them a control number. Later that day, I was contacted by flight crew in ZZZ in order to discuss MEL's being carried by aircraft. MEL 27-00-xy had been previously applied to aircraft and it did not allow any other hydraulic system malfunctions. This made the application of MEL 29-00-xx illegal. I notified ZZZ line maintenance and had the conflicting deferred item cleared. MEL 29-00-xx does not make reference to MEL 27-00-xy. I contacted our MEL group and asked them if a reference could be added in order to avoid future problems.

Title: A B727-200 WAS DISPATCHED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH A FLT CTL LOW PRESSURE LIGHT INOP AND A HYD PUMP LOW PRESSURE LIGHT INOP IN CONFLICT WITH THE MEL.
Narrative: FLC CONTACTED ME ENRTE TO BNA. THEY NOTIFIED ME THAT THE #1 SYS 'A' HYD PUMP LOW PRESSURE LIGHT WAS INOP AND THAT THEY WERE LOOKING AT MEL REF 29-00-XX AND WANTED TO FLC PLACARD THE ITEM. I REVIEWED THE MEL REF AND ISSUED THEM A CTL NUMBER. LATER THAT DAY, I WAS CONTACTED BY FLC IN ZZZ IN ORDER TO DISCUSS MEL'S BEING CARRIED BY ACFT. MEL 27-00-XY HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY APPLIED TO ACFT AND IT DID NOT ALLOW ANY OTHER HYD SYS MALFUNCTIONS. THIS MADE THE APPLICATION OF MEL 29-00-XX ILLEGAL. I NOTIFIED ZZZ LINE MAINT AND HAD THE CONFLICTING DEFERRED ITEM CLRED. MEL 29-00-XX DOES NOT MAKE REF TO MEL 27-00-XY. I CONTACTED OUR MEL GROUP AND ASKED THEM IF A REF COULD BE ADDED IN ORDER TO AVOID FUTURE PROBS.
