Narrative:

While climbing through approximately 10000 ft with the autoplt on, the lavatory smoke alert illuminated on the ead. A slight audible beeping could be heard. The captain attempted to contact the flight attendant while I got out the pom. There was no immediate response from the flight attendant so the captain sent the jump seat rider (who had just recently xferred from the MD11) back to see what he could ascertain. Shortly thereafter, the flight attendant came to the cockpit and informed us that the crew rest module smoke detector was activated. She also said that she noticed a burning odor. Both the captain and I concurred with smelling the odor, and we agreed that we should divert back to jfk. We declared an emergency with new york departure, donned our smoke masks, and made an immediate uneventful landing on runway 13R at jfk.
