Narrative:

On takeoff, we set takeoff power. Before our '80 KTS' callout we heard a 'bang.' we aborted the takeoff. The tower said they saw smoke from the left engine. We shut the left engine down as we taxied off the runway. We asked the tower if they still saw smoke, they did, so we discharged a fire bottle and called for fire and rescue. There was no fire indication in the cockpit and the aft flight attendant saw no fire and reported no smoke in the cabin. The tower said there was still smoke, so we discharged the other fire bottle and did the emergency evacuate/evacuation checklist. Just before we initiated the evacuate/evacuation, the fire trucks were foaming the engine. With still no fire indication and no smoke in the cabin, we decided against an evacuate/evacuation of 107 persons for fear of injury. The fire department wanted the people off the plane so we deplaned using the main cabin door and airstairs. No injuries to passenger or crew.
