Narrative:
I departed mmu on a local scenic flight. I immediately contacted ewr tower on 127.85 and requested clearance to enter class B airspace. Ewr tower instructed me to report 10 mi west of the airport at route 78. I misunderstood the boundaries of the class B airspace and misidented route 78, unintentionally penetrating the class B airspace before receiving clearance to enter. Being relatively new to the area and unfamiliar with the terrain and landmarks east of morristown contributed to my error. A detailed briefing of the area and the landmarks east of morristown, and 1 or 2 familiarization flts through the area will prevent a recurrence of the problem.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: UNAUTH UNCOORD ENTRY OF CLASS B AIRSPACE BY THE PLT OF A C172 ON A PLEASURE FLT NEAR EWR, NJ.
Narrative: I DEPARTED MMU ON A LCL SCENIC FLT. I IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED EWR TWR ON 127.85 AND REQUESTED CLRNC TO ENTER CLASS B AIRSPACE. EWR TWR INSTRUCTED ME TO RPT 10 MI W OF THE ARPT AT RTE 78. I MISUNDERSTOOD THE BOUNDARIES OF THE CLASS B AIRSPACE AND MISIDENTED RTE 78, UNINTENTIONALLY PENETRATING THE CLASS B AIRSPACE BEFORE RECEIVING CLRNC TO ENTER. BEING RELATIVELY NEW TO THE AREA AND UNFAMILIAR WITH THE TERRAIN AND LANDMARKS E OF MORRISTOWN CONTRIBUTED TO MY ERROR. A DETAILED BRIEFING OF THE AREA AND THE LANDMARKS E OF MORRISTOWN, AND 1 OR 2 FAMILIARIZATION FLTS THROUGH THE AREA WILL PREVENT A RECURRENCE OF THE PROB.
