Narrative:

Operating from stp, VFR flight to reposition aircraft to fcm. I planned to depart VFR to the south and skirt around the msp class B below 2000 ft. Received clearance to takeoff and depart the traffic pattern from left down wind runway 32. Turning crosswind to downwind, tower advised that approach may be able to take our flight over the top of msp (a more direct route to fcm), and to contact them on 121.20. I contacted approach and reported my position as 1 mi west of stp at 2000 ft and requested vectors over msp to fcm. The controller assigned a squawk code and assigned a heading of 270 degrees and an altitude of 3500 ft. Most of my flying is IFR so I initially began to comply with the clearance by climbing and turning right. I queried ATC to determine if I was cleared to enter class B.

Title: UNAUTH UNCOORD ENTRY OF CLASS B AIRSPACE BY THE PLT OF A BE-20 ON A REPOSITION FLT NEAR STP, MN.

Narrative: OPERATING FROM STP, VFR FLT TO REPOSITION ACFT TO FCM. I PLANNED TO DEPART VFR TO THE S AND SKIRT AROUND THE MSP CLASS B BELOW 2000 FT. RECEIVED CLRNC TO TKOF AND DEPART THE TFC PATTERN FROM L DOWN WIND RWY 32. TURNING XWIND TO DOWNWIND, TWR ADVISED THAT APCH MAY BE ABLE TO TAKE OUR FLT OVER THE TOP OF MSP (A MORE DIRECT RTE TO FCM), AND TO CONTACT THEM ON 121.20. I CONTACTED APCH AND RPTED MY POS AS 1 MI W OF STP AT 2000 FT AND REQUESTED VECTORS OVER MSP TO FCM. THE CTLR ASSIGNED A SQUAWK CODE AND ASSIGNED A HDG OF 270 DEGS AND AN ALT OF 3500 FT. MOST OF MY FLYING IS IFR SO I INITIALLY BEGAN TO COMPLY WITH THE CLRNC BY CLBING AND TURNING R. I QUERIED ATC TO DETERMINE IF I WAS CLRED TO ENTER CLASS B.
