Narrative:

During takeoff, at about 300 ft AGL, 1, 2, or 3 large birds were ingested into the left engine. At about 500 ft AGL, smoke started to enter flight deck and cabin. Emergency was declared. Left pack was turned off (smoke stopped). Engine failure checklists were accomplished,. Normal landing was accomplished on runway 21R dtw with equipment standing by. After inspection by fire department, aircraft taxied to gate. Passenger deplaned.
