Narrative:

At approximately XB00, air carrier X arrived to the hangar for nose gear inner cylinder replacement due to chrome peeling off. The aircraft was jacked and inner cylinder removed. At that point order came in to remove nose inner cylinder from aircraft which was in for 14 check inspector. The mechanic went to aircraft, and removed the inner cylinder. By that time it was approximately XD00 hours. That's when I left for home. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated no one bothered to check the effectivity of the upper bearing on the robbed aircraft as everyone knows the strut pistons are interchangeable on all MD80 aircraft. The reporter said checking the maintenance manual it was noted the heavy and light upper bearings and the airplane number effectivity. The reporter stated the wrong upper piston bearing was installed with the robbed lower strut piston.
