Narrative:

Departed runway 30L sjc xa 10'clock am. WX -- wind calm (about) 1500 ft ovc. Tops, 3000 ft, clear on top. In clearance we were instructed to fly -- basically fly runway heading to sjc VOR -- go outbound until 1 pt 8 DME from sjc VOR. Turn right heading 110 degrees to intercept oakland right 121 to moony intersection then to avenal VOR (ave). Instead of turning at 1 pt 8 DME we turned at about .2 DME. Aircraft FMS equipped. Captain appeared to look at distance to active waypoint instead of DME from sjc VOR and we turned to heading 110 degrees early to intercept the 121 right from oak. No traffic conflict and no terrain conflicts.
