Narrative:

Was given taxi instructions to 'taxi runway 7L, taxiway N5, hold short runway 16.' my student read back the taxi instructions except told ATC 'taxiway N4.' ATC read the correction taxiway N5 and he read back taxiway N5. While taxiing, another aircraft was having trouble with its location on the airport. There was a lot of radio chatter. With normal operations at dab we don't hold short of runway 16. As if it were any other day, we cleared visually the final and runway of 16/34, and proceeded across. 3/4 of the way across runway 16, we got call, 'you were to hold short of runway 16.' I sped the aircraft up and stopped on the other side of the runway and asked for further instructions. We were then cleared to taxiway N5 again. Contributing factors: complacency, comfort zones, failure to write down the clearance, what was said and heard not equal to what I expected to hear.
