Narrative:

Gatwick tower said position after takeoff maintenance runway alignment, maintain 4000 ft. I asked my first officer to confirm position and hold. My first officer asked the tower to confirm position and hold, and gatwick tower said that's correct. I cleared for landing traffic and went into position and hold. At that point after I went into position and hold, gatwick tower told us we were not cleared to line up and told us to exit the runway at the second exit on the right. The main problem is the english use position with hold position, and the united states uses position with position and hold. The english use line up and wait, and we use position and hold. When we asked to confirm position and hold, I believe he thought we were going to hold our position.

MY FO ASKED THE TWR TO CONFIRM POS AND HOLD, AND GATWICK TWR SAID THAT'S CORRECT. I CLRED FOR LNDG TFC AND WENT INTO POS AND HOLD. AT THAT POINT AFTER I WENT INTO POS AND HOLD, GATWICK TWR TOLD US WE WERE NOT CLRED TO LINE UP AND TOLD US TO EXIT THE RWY AT THE SECOND EXIT ON THE R.
