Narrative:

I filed an IFR flight plan from sql to smx. The instrument departure is on runway 12. Winds were 250 degrees at 15 KTS, which would have meant a tailwind component of 10 KTS, which I felt was unsafe with a fully loaded airplane and a 2600 ft runway. Low clouds were close to the departure end (to the north) but it was clear overhead, to the east, west, and so. So I took off VFR on runway 30. For historical reasons, the traffic pattern is to the east. When I last flew into san carlos in 1979, there were no houses to the east, so this pattern made sense. Now there is densely populated housing on both side. The floor of the TCA is 1500 ft to the east and 4000 ft to the west, with the dividing line basically over the runway. Noise abatement procedures call for reducing power at 800 ft, overflying the houses, re-establishing a climb, and not turning away from the class B airspace until crossing whipple avenue. (I try not to read road signs when I fly.) while trying to find whipple avenue, I inadvertently climbed to 1800 ft -- 300 ft above the floor of the class B airspace. This aircraft, in which I have 12 hours, climbs much faster than my C150! Your friendly ATC controller was kind enough to inform me of my error on the radio. I had the airliners going to sfo in sight at all times. There was never a safety hazard. Recommendation: since the formerly vacant land east of the airport is now full of houses, change the traffic pattern at san carlos to the west side. Also, establish an IFR departure using runway 30, with a left turn.

Title: PVT PLT OF AN AERO COMMAND 112 INADVERTENTLY CLBED ABOVE HIS INTENDED ALT DURING DEP UNDERNEATH CLASS B AIRSPACE RESULTING IN PENETRATION OF CLASS B AIRSPACE.

LOW CLOUDS WERE CLOSE TO THE DEP END (TO THE N) BUT IT WAS CLR OVERHEAD, TO THE E, W, AND SO. SO I TOOK OFF VFR ON RWY 30. FOR HISTORICAL REASONS, THE TFC PATTERN IS TO THE E. WHEN I LAST FLEW INTO SAN CARLOS IN 1979, THERE WERE NO HOUSES TO THE E, SO THIS PATTERN MADE SENSE. NOW THERE IS DENSELY POPULATED HOUSING ON BOTH SIDE. THE FLOOR OF THE TCA IS 1500 FT TO THE E AND 4000 FT TO THE W, WITH THE DIVIDING LINE BASICALLY OVER THE RWY. THIS ACFT, IN WHICH I HAVE 12 HRS, CLBS MUCH FASTER THAN MY C150! YOUR FRIENDLY ATC CTLR WAS KIND ENOUGH TO INFORM ME OF MY ERROR ON THE RADIO. I HAD THE AIRLINERS GOING TO SFO IN SIGHT AT ALL TIMES. THERE WAS NEVER A SAFETY HAZARD. RECOMMENDATION: SINCE THE FORMERLY VACANT LAND E OF THE ARPT IS NOW FULL OF HOUSES, CHANGE THE TFC PATTERN AT SAN CARLOS TO THE W SIDE. ALSO, ESTABLISH AN IFR DEP USING RWY 30, WITH A L TURN.
