Narrative:

TCASII warning, initiated go around. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: so stated that he never saw the aircraft. The crew reacted solely on the basis of the RA. The aircraft had been on a visual approach, on base leg for runway 25R. There had been no TA. The runway was in sight at the time. When the crew advised tower of the go around, there was at first silence -- then a clearance for the pattern and a return landing. Reporter admits that it may have been a false alarm.

Title: A B727-200 FERRY CREW PERFORMS A GAR WHEN THEIR TCASII RA ADVISES A CLB FOR EVASIVE ACTION 4 MI E OF LAX, CA.

Narrative: TCASII WARNING, INITIATED GAR. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: SO STATED THAT HE NEVER SAW THE ACFT. THE CREW REACTED SOLELY ON THE BASIS OF THE RA. THE ACFT HAD BEEN ON A VISUAL APCH, ON BASE LEG FOR RWY 25R. THERE HAD BEEN NO TA. THE RWY WAS IN SIGHT AT THE TIME. WHEN THE CREW ADVISED TWR OF THE GAR, THERE WAS AT FIRST SILENCE -- THEN A CLRNC FOR THE PATTERN AND A RETURN LNDG. RPTR ADMITS THAT IT MAY HAVE BEEN A FALSE ALARM.
