Narrative:

On feb/xa/00, while performing maintenance on #3 engine, a fire was started in the 13TH stage manifold area during a welding function at that time a dry chemical fire extinguisher was discharged into the 13TH stage fan section and 2 tubes just forward of manifold inside engine case. The fire was caused by some rags that were stuffed inside engine case to prevent debris from falling into lower sections of engine were ignited by the welding operation. On feb/xb/00 we were told to vacuum as much as possible of dry chemical and close and reinstall 13TH stage manifold and xover duct. Having looked at maintenance manual procedures on MD80 aircraft about dry chemical being injected into an engine, this is not proper procedure. I am in process of trying to find this in B727 maintenance manual due to scheduling of engine run. I feel that this will not be properly corrected.
