Narrative:

On radar vectors for visual approach to runway 36L mem. Controller ordered 'fly direct to koley.' (koley is OM -- no compass locator -- for ILS runway 36L.) while looking for INS coordinates (latitude/longitude) for koley, I set up a dead reckoning heading of 060 degrees. After about 6 mi on this heading, still could not find coordinates for koley. Controller asked what our heading was. We reported 060 degrees and asked if that looked ok for koley. Controller assigned heading 070 degrees and scolded me for not telling him that we were not electronically navigating to koley. WX conditions were severe clear, night VMC, little other air traffic.
