Narrative:

On initial climb, flight attendant notified us of a very strong smokey, burning smell that was becoming much worse. We could smell it when they opened the cockpit door. I told him we would return to the field and to prepare to land. We did our QRH procedures, declared an emergency, and told ATC we needed to return. As they turned us back, we requested fire equipment standing by. We completed required items as well as QRH overweight landing. As we lowered gear, flight attendant said smokey fumes were subsiding. After stopping on runway we were checked by fire equipment outside and flight attendant said everything in cabin was now clear. We taxied to gate with fire equipment as a precaution.
