Narrative:

On approach to sgj, AWOS showed 12-20 winds out of the north. Unicom reported local traffic using runway 2. Monitoring of CTAF confirmed numerous aircraft in pattern for runway 2. I entered on 45 degree leg for left downwind runway 2, #3 in the pattern. At this time a beech duke reported leaving the ramp taxiing to runway 31 I made calls on downwind, base, final, and short final. As I touched my wheels on runway 2, the duke reported departing runway 31 (this was the first call from the duke since he left the ramp). I thought of going around but was afraid of a midair. Instead, I braked as hard as possible and stopped just before the intersection and just as the duke went by on his takeoff roll. The saving factor was a strong headwind and having been aware of the duke's reported leaving of the ramp.
