Narrative:

Our flight was at 14000 ft inbound to atl airport expecting runway 8L approach. Approach controller called and changed runway to runway 9R and in the same transmission cleared us to 12000 ft. We thought we were cleared to 9000 ft. Both pilots used double point system to verify that 9000 ft was set in altitude window. As we passed 10300 ft. The controller called to say that we were only cleared to 12000 ft. He reclred us to climb to and maintain 11000 ft. Flight was then completed uneventfully. In a phone conversation with the ATC supervisor, we learned that we had in fact read back 12000 ft. The supervisor also stated that at no time during this event was there a traffic conflict.
