Narrative:

Upon leaving an area known as kamalo, I radioed kapalua unicom with my intentions to cross from kamalo to blackrock at 1000 ft. I was at the time flying an a5350b2 helicopter and the WX was VMC, with unlimited ceiling, and virtually unrestr visibility. Approximately 1/2 to 1 mi offshore of blackrock, I was informed by kapalua unicom that there was a dash 8 behind me. I initially banked the aircraft to the left and when I could not establish a visual with the dash 8 I banked the helicopter back to the right, back to my original intended course which was to be 1/2 mi offshore and sbound towards lahaina. At this time, I saw the dash 8 approximately 300 ft behind me and 300 ft above me. The pilot of the dash 8 was saying 'get down, go down' on the radio, which I did. I continued on towards lahaina and heard the pilot of the dash 8 say 'that was close' and then asked kapalua 'what was the call sign of that helicopter?' I believe a possible contributing factor to this incident may have been misinfo given to the dash 8 pilot. I believe he may have been told that a helicopter was crossing kamalu to lahaina when in fact I had said kamalo to blackrock. Also, other xmissions on the frequency kept me from updating my position and intentions. After the incident, something was said by kapalua requesting that if 360 degree turns were to be performed, that I need to let them know. No 360 degree turns were performed. Only the initial left bank to try to locate the overtaking aircraft.

AT THIS TIME, I SAW THE DASH 8 APPROX 300 FT BEHIND ME AND 300 FT ABOVE ME. THE PLT OF THE DASH 8 WAS SAYING 'GET DOWN, GO DOWN' ON THE RADIO, WHICH I DID. I CONTINUED ON TOWARDS LAHAINA AND HEARD THE PLT OF THE DASH 8 SAY 'THAT WAS CLOSE' AND THEN ASKED KAPALUA 'WHAT WAS THE CALL SIGN OF THAT HELI?' I BELIEVE A POSSIBLE CONTRIBUTING FACTOR TO THIS INCIDENT MAY HAVE BEEN MISINFO GIVEN TO THE DASH 8 PLT. I BELIEVE HE MAY HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT A HELI WAS XING KAMALU TO LAHAINA WHEN IN FACT I HAD SAID KAMALO TO BLACKROCK. ALSO, OTHER XMISSIONS ON THE FREQ KEPT ME FROM UPDATING MY POS AND INTENTIONS. AFTER THE INCIDENT, SOMETHING WAS SAID BY KAPALUA REQUESTING THAT IF 360 DEG TURNS WERE TO BE PERFORMED, THAT I NEED TO LET THEM KNOW. NO 360 DEG TURNS WERE PERFORMED. ONLY THE INITIAL L BANK TO TRY TO LOCATE THE OVERTAKING ACFT.
