Narrative:

Received departure clearance from hwd tower for a VFR northeast turnout. After takeoff from runway 28L, approximately XA45 local, I continued my climb out toward lake chabot. Was notified by tower that I had entered into class D airspace (2000 ft altitude reported) while I was only cleared to 1500 ft altitude. The tower was late in handing me off to ZOA and I misinterped my departure clearance.
