Narrative:

Cleared from FL310 to FL330 by ZID. At FL318 ARTCC told us to descend to FL310 immediately and turn hard right to 270 degrees. There was obvious concern in his voice and we aggressively complied. About 3 seconds later the TCASII gave us 'traffic.' we acquired the aircraft visually slightly to our right at FL330. The ATC controller made a mistake but took aggressive corrective action. TCASII was a help in acquiring the traffic. It also helped that it was daytime and VMC clear and sunny.
