Narrative:

On taxi out for takeoff at fai, made a right turn from ramp. Believed this was a paved area. When first officer, who had been heads down, looked up, he said 'this doesn't look right.' so I stopped aircraft, determined aircraft nose gear was not on pavement. Aircraft towed back to gate. No damage or injuries. Additional factors include a snow covered ramp with no delineation between paved surface and unpaved surface. This was my first taxi at fai with a snow covered ramp. Also, crew fatigue was a factor.
