Narrative:

Our clearance was to taxi to runway 28R via taxiway east and taxiway a. I asked my first officer if there was an inner and outer taxiway. He responded that taxiway a was the outer taxiway. I looked at the taxi chart and it appeared to me that I had to pass taxiway a slightly, then turn onto the taxiway. As I approached taxiway a, I saw 1 taxiway which I assumed was the inner. I taxied past that and suddenly realized that I was about to enter runway 28R. I stopped the aircraft immediately. Ground control concurrently told us to stop. I estimate that the nosewheel crossed the hold short line by approximately 5 ft. When I realized my mistake I made a 180 degree turn and re-entered taxiway a. At no time did the aircraft actually enter the runway. I feel that this incident was caused by several factors. It was at night. There is construction in progress at the airport and several construction lights which are nonstandard (see page highlighted). When my copilot said there was an inner and other taxiway, I took that at face value. Reading the taxi chart at night under low lighting conditions, it looked like I had to pass taxiway a slightly then turn onto it. Our airline was standing by to go on strike and I feel the subtle stress of that definitely affects human performance.

Title: CARGO ACFT TAXIING MISREADS ARPT DIAGRAM AND HAS NOSEWHEEL CROSS THE HOLD LINE TO RWY. GND NOTICES AT THE SAME TIME AS FLC WHO STOPS ACFT. THEY ARE ABLE TO TURN AND TAXI BACK ONTO ASSIGNED TXWY.

Narrative: OUR CLRNC WAS TO TAXI TO RWY 28R VIA TXWY E AND TXWY A. I ASKED MY FO IF THERE WAS AN INNER AND OUTER TXWY. HE RESPONDED THAT TXWY A WAS THE OUTER TXWY. I LOOKED AT THE TAXI CHART AND IT APPEARED TO ME THAT I HAD TO PASS TXWY A SLIGHTLY, THEN TURN ONTO THE TXWY. AS I APCHED TXWY A, I SAW 1 TXWY WHICH I ASSUMED WAS THE INNER. I TAXIED PAST THAT AND SUDDENLY REALIZED THAT I WAS ABOUT TO ENTER RWY 28R. I STOPPED THE ACFT IMMEDIATELY. GND CTL CONCURRENTLY TOLD US TO STOP. I ESTIMATE THAT THE NOSEWHEEL CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE BY APPROX 5 FT. WHEN I REALIZED MY MISTAKE I MADE A 180 DEG TURN AND RE-ENTERED TXWY A. AT NO TIME DID THE ACFT ACTUALLY ENTER THE RWY. I FEEL THAT THIS INCIDENT WAS CAUSED BY SEVERAL FACTORS. IT WAS AT NIGHT. THERE IS CONSTRUCTION IN PROGRESS AT THE ARPT AND SEVERAL CONSTRUCTION LIGHTS WHICH ARE NONSTANDARD (SEE PAGE HIGHLIGHTED). WHEN MY COPLT SAID THERE WAS AN INNER AND OTHER TXWY, I TOOK THAT AT FACE VALUE. READING THE TAXI CHART AT NIGHT UNDER LOW LIGHTING CONDITIONS, IT LOOKED LIKE I HAD TO PASS TXWY A SLIGHTLY THEN TURN ONTO IT. OUR AIRLINE WAS STANDING BY TO GO ON STRIKE AND I FEEL THE SUBTLE STRESS OF THAT DEFINITELY AFFECTS HUMAN PERFORMANCE.
