Narrative:

This was a primary training flight and we were closed pattern, for touch-and-goes. We turned crosswind and were about to turn downwind. As we looked first to our left before initiating the turn, we saw the much faster bonanza cut inside of us and then continue to the east. Had we not looked first, there may have been an accident. The bonanza was instructed that we were left closed traffic, off runway 29: 'bonanza cleared for takeoff, departing traffic is left closed, left turn approved.' this was too close!
