Narrative:

Flight xyz nov/xa/98 clt to lwb. Climbing through 14500 ft, lost left engine. Was unable to maintain altitude. Declared emergency. Squawked 7700 and returned to clt. Due to loss of engine and unable to maintain altitude, received 1 TA and later found out there was loss of separation. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the engine gave no prior indication or warning of failure. The reporter said the propeller reduction gear box was damaged extensively and was the cause of the failure. The reporter said the entire engine was replaced.

Title: A BA31 IN CLB AT 14500 FT DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO SUDDEN FAILURE OF THE PROP REDUCTION GEAR BOX. A LOSS OF SEPARATION WAS RPTED BY ATC DURING DIVERSION. ALSO RECEIVED A TA.

Narrative: FLT XYZ NOV/XA/98 CLT TO LWB. CLBING THROUGH 14500 FT, LOST L ENG. WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN ALT. DECLARED EMER. SQUAWKED 7700 AND RETURNED TO CLT. DUE TO LOSS OF ENG AND UNABLE TO MAINTAIN ALT, RECEIVED 1 TA AND LATER FOUND OUT THERE WAS LOSS OF SEPARATION. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ENG GAVE NO PRIOR INDICATION OR WARNING OF FAILURE. THE RPTR SAID THE PROP REDUCTION GEAR BOX WAS DAMAGED EXTENSIVELY AND WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE RPTR SAID THE ENTIRE ENG WAS REPLACED.
