ARTCC radar controller informed flight crew of an medium large transport that they had overshot their assigned cruising altitude. Reporting flight crew recorded the higher altitude and acknowledged clearance to that altitude. However, they thought it contrary for the direction of flight.

Narrative:

Climbing out of 27000 ft to 28000 ft, center asked what our altitude was. I said we were level at 28000 ft. He said that we were assigned FL270. I strongly disagree. I'm almost sure, he assigned us FL280. I put it in the altitude alerter, read back 28000 ft and my first officer read back 28000 ft. The controller said we were cleared to 27000 ft and that he was about to clear us to 28000 ft, but that we were a little ahead of him. I think he missed the readback. I can't be sure, because I don't have the tapes. I've noticed, when I question a clearance or an altitude with controllers, that they don't listen to my readback. This has been going on now for the last 2 or 3 yrs now.

THE CTLR SAID WE WERE CLRED TO 27000 FT AND THAT HE WAS ABOUT TO CLR US TO 28000 FT, BUT THAT WE WERE A LITTLE AHEAD OF HIM. I THINK HE MISSED THE READBACK. I CAN'T BE SURE, BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE THE TAPES. I'VE NOTICED, WHEN I QUESTION A CLRNC OR AN ALT WITH CTLRS, THAT THEY DON'T LISTEN TO MY READBACK. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON NOW FOR THE LAST 2 OR 3 YRS NOW.
