Narrative:

Fog was thick and instrument approachs were in progress to runways 12L and 12R. We were on our way to runway 12R. We watched several jets land when the controller said, 'make the turn onto taxiway M and without delay cross runway 12L taxi to runway 12R.' as timely as I could, we made the turn and due to the angle of taxiway M in relation to runway 12L the first officer and cockpit jump seater advised there was an MD80 about 1/2 mi from the end of the runway 12L. I stopped. The MD80 momentarily leveled off. The controller then said, 'I see you've stopped...thanks.' the MD80 landed, we then continued. No other problems. Had we continued the MD80 would have had to go around or would have hit our tail.
