Narrative:

Departed toa about XX00 local. Had socal flight following to cruise altitude of 11500 ft MSL. About 5 NM west of pdz, socal could not 'hand off' and advised to squawk VFR 1200. I did. At that time, I was level at 11500 ft on V399 between sli and pdz. Socal advised to contact ZLA in 15 mi on 125.65. About 15 NM east of pdz on V388, I contacted center on 125.65. Center advised to contact socal on 119.65. On contacting socal, I received a squawk code and heard socal direct an air carrier Y flight to take evasive action, ie, right turn. The traffic sounded like me and I looked up to see an air carrier (B727?) on a head-on course about 10 degrees to right of my heading. Both planes, air carrier Y and mine, made descending right turns. Believe air carrier Y was descending into ont or approach to lax. Had I have had flight following, the problem would/should have been recognized sooner. The near head-on relationship made time to see each other minimum. (Closing speed probably was in excess of 600 mph.)

Title: PVT PLT OF AN SEL SMA TOOK EVASIVE ACTION BY MAKING A R DSNDING TURN TO AVOID AN ACR B727 COMING STRAIGHT FOR HIM DURING CRUISE. THE RPTING PLT HAD JUST RE-ESTABLISHED FLT FOLLOWING WITH APCH CTL AND HEARD THE CTLR ADVISE THE B727 TO MAKE AN IMMEDIATE TURN TO AVOID AN ACFT HE BELIEVED WAS HIM. IT WAS AND HE ALSO MADE A DSNDING TURN TO AVOID A COLLISION.

Narrative: DEPARTED TOA ABOUT XX00 LCL. HAD SOCAL FLT FOLLOWING TO CRUISE ALT OF 11500 FT MSL. ABOUT 5 NM W OF PDZ, SOCAL COULD NOT 'HAND OFF' AND ADVISED TO SQUAWK VFR 1200. I DID. AT THAT TIME, I WAS LEVEL AT 11500 FT ON V399 BTWN SLI AND PDZ. SOCAL ADVISED TO CONTACT ZLA IN 15 MI ON 125.65. ABOUT 15 NM E OF PDZ ON V388, I CONTACTED CTR ON 125.65. CTR ADVISED TO CONTACT SOCAL ON 119.65. ON CONTACTING SOCAL, I RECEIVED A SQUAWK CODE AND HEARD SOCAL DIRECT AN ACR Y FLT TO TAKE EVASIVE ACTION, IE, R TURN. THE TFC SOUNDED LIKE ME AND I LOOKED UP TO SEE AN ACR (B727?) ON A HEAD-ON COURSE ABOUT 10 DEGS TO R OF MY HDG. BOTH PLANES, ACR Y AND MINE, MADE DSNDING R TURNS. BELIEVE ACR Y WAS DSNDING INTO ONT OR APCH TO LAX. HAD I HAVE HAD FLT FOLLOWING, THE PROB WOULD/SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECOGNIZED SOONER. THE NEAR HEAD-ON RELATIONSHIP MADE TIME TO SEE EACH OTHER MINIMUM. (CLOSING SPD PROBABLY WAS IN EXCESS OF 600 MPH.)
