Narrative:

During taxi out the captain called the purser via the interphone. Purser informed all flight attendants there was an engine fire in the #1 engine and to go to your assigned exits and wait further instructions. The aircraft returned to the gate. Passenger remained onboard approximately 30-45 mins before deplaning via the ramp stands. There were no injuries, just a few shaken passenger. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated that the captain kept the passenger informed throughout the emergency as to the nature of the mechanical which helped to keep the passenger calm. The aircraft taxied back to the gate area. Bda has no jetways which is the reason ramp stands were the means used to deplane the passenger. Reporter felt the incident was handled well by the captain. Reporter stated that if the slides had been used it is possible there would have been injuries sustained. The aircraft was taken OTS.

Title: DC10 ON TAXI EXPERIENCED #1 ENG FIRE AND RETURNED TO GATE.

Narrative: DURING TAXI OUT THE CAPT CALLED THE PURSER VIA THE INTERPHONE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATED THAT THE CAPT KEPT THE PAX INFORMED THROUGHOUT THE EMER AS TO THE NATURE OF THE MECHANICAL WHICH HELPED TO KEEP THE PAX CALM. THE ACFT TAXIED BACK TO THE GATE AREA. BDA HAS NO JETWAYS WHICH IS THE REASON RAMP STANDS WERE THE MEANS USED TO DEPLANE THE PAX. RPTR FELT THE INCIDENT WAS HANDLED WELL BY THE CAPT. RPTR STATED THAT IF THE SLIDES HAD BEEN USED IT IS POSSIBLE THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN INJURIES SUSTAINED. THE ACFT WAS TAKEN OTS.
