Narrative:

On initial climb from 3000 ft to 4000 ft as assigned by ATC, the captain (me) advised that I will go off #1 communication to go to #2 communication to call operations. The first officer confirmed to this. We both missed the 100 ft callout and at 4400 ft the deviation was discovered and was quickly corrected by descending down to 4000 ft. Contributing factors: although company call on my side was legal, I should not call company or allow my first officer call company unless at level cruise altitude. The first officer was looking outside because there was a buildup at 11-12 O'clock and he was more concerned how to avoid it.
