Narrative:

Our pre departure clearance via ACARS read: SFO8 departure, lin transition maintain FL230. Second page read: expect revised SID/contact clearance delivery 118.2. We both missed the frequency as a request to contact clearance, and set 118.2 as our departure frequency. On taxi out, ground control changed our SID to quiet 2 lin transition which the first officer loaded into the FMC. After takeoff as PNF I switched to what I thought was departure frequency and discovered that I was on clearance delivery. When I put in the correct frequency, we were passing 5000 ft for FL230. Departure control said 'disregard 2000 ft, climb to FL230.' TCASII did not show any conflict, but we obviously missed a 2000 ft restr that clearance wanted us to maintain. We both missed the frequency on pre departure clearance as a request to contact clearance delivery. Both assumed the frequency was a departure control frequency. Maybe the fact that this was a 'red eye' flight and our bodies were on east coast time contributed to the error.

Original NASA ASRS Text

Title: ACR CREW DEPARTED SFO ON SID AND MISTAKENLY HAD SET THE CLRNC DELIVERY FREQ IN AS THE DEP FREQ. AS A RESULT, THE FLT WAS OUT OF 5000 FT BEFORE ESTABLISHING CONTACT WITH DEP CTL AND MAY HAVE MISSED A RESTR TO STOP AT 2000 FT.

Narrative: OUR PDC VIA ACARS READ: SFO8 DEP, LIN TRANSITION MAINTAIN FL230. SECOND PAGE READ: EXPECT REVISED SID/CONTACT CLRNC DELIVERY 118.2. WE BOTH MISSED THE FREQ AS A REQUEST TO CONTACT CLRNC, AND SET 118.2 AS OUR DEP FREQ. ON TAXI OUT, GND CTL CHANGED OUR SID TO QUIET 2 LIN TRANSITION WHICH THE FO LOADED INTO THE FMC. AFTER TKOF AS PNF I SWITCHED TO WHAT I THOUGHT WAS DEP FREQ AND DISCOVERED THAT I WAS ON CLRNC DELIVERY. WHEN I PUT IN THE CORRECT FREQ, WE WERE PASSING 5000 FT FOR FL230. DEP CTL SAID 'DISREGARD 2000 FT, CLB TO FL230.' TCASII DID NOT SHOW ANY CONFLICT, BUT WE OBVIOUSLY MISSED A 2000 FT RESTR THAT CLRNC WANTED US TO MAINTAIN. WE BOTH MISSED THE FREQ ON PDC AS A REQUEST TO CONTACT CLRNC DELIVERY. BOTH ASSUMED THE FREQ WAS A DEP CTL FREQ. MAYBE THE FACT THAT THIS WAS A 'RED EYE' FLT AND OUR BODIES WERE ON EAST COAST TIME CONTRIBUTED TO THE ERROR.
