Flight crew of a DC10-30 cargo aircraft turned the wrong way after takeoff on departure climb. ATC intervened and instructed them to turn the opposite direction. After turning back the opposite way, they flew over and well clear of other traffic.

Narrative:

First officer initially turned left, departure control vectored us right then inquired why we made a left turn. Captain asked to confirm which departure we were supposed to be on and got no reply. We were then vectored on course. We passed over other traffic but appeared well clear of them.
