Narrative:

Climbing out on the way to ind, ZOB cleared us to 12000 ft. First officer's leg. I read back 'climb and maintain one-two thousand.' I set 12000 ft in the altitude alerter. As we leveled off at 12000 ft, center called and said we were only cleared to 11000 ft. We immediately descended to 11000 ft and I told center I read back 12000 ft. He said 'no problem.' if I had read back 'one-two, twelve thousand,' it might have helped.
