Narrative:

Descended into bgi on UA555 clearance was: cleared for a visual down the west shoreline. Altitude clearance was 3000 ft prior to this point. We descended to 2000 ft, the ILS appropriate altitude for GS intercept. At that point adams approach said we were cleared to 3000 ft only. We replied we thought we were cleared for a visual approach.
