Narrative:

I was cleared to land runway 35L dwh. On rollout tower said 'clear runway at taxiway east, hold short taxiway F, stay with me.' as I was turning at taxiway east, tower said to 'contact ground control.' I turned at taxiway east, made sure I had cleared the runway 35L 'hold short' line off runway 35L at taxiway east and tuned in on the radio, 121.8. I contacted ground. They asked if there was room for a PA-34 to get by me on to taxiway F. I realized then I had pulled up too close to taxiway F. My nose was on the edge of it and the PA-34 has a 40 ft wing span! The intersection of runway 35L hold line and taxiway F can not be more than 40 ft. In my concern to clear runway 35L and tuning in ground control, I had inadvertently moved up 5 ft too far. There is no hold short taxiway F line from taxiway east. In short, confined areas should be marked! Ground control was a little upset with me, reminding me I was instructed to hold short taxiway F and told me to do a '180 turn' on the taxiway to allow traffic by. I told ground control I was sorry but I was just making sure I was clear of runway 35L. He told me next time to 'leave my tail over the hold short line of runway 35L at taxiway east and there would be enough room.' this is a bad situation. A hold short taxiway F should be painted. Ground control and tower should coordinate landing and clearing traffic so that if someone clears the runway hold line by 5 ft he will not violate a hold short clearance! Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated that after further review and consideration of the close proximity of the txwys to the runway, it probably would not help to have a hold short line established at that point. The hold line would have to be so close to the taxiway that even small aircraft, such as the one he was flying, would overhang the runway. He further stated that the airport is privately owned and operated, and is basically used by general aviation aircraft. There is no air carrier service using the airport. Therefore, it does not get airport 'adap' government funds. It was suggested that this subject be brought to the attention of the airport tower coordinating quarterly user meeting and the FSDO local pilot safety meeting. In conclusion, it would seem better to change the tower procedure to hold short aircraft to an intersecting taxiway, which caused them to overhang the main active runway, than to establish a hold short line.

Title: PLT OF A BEECH SUNDOWNER, BE23, FAILED TO HOLD SHORT OF AN INTERSECTING TXWY AS INSTRUCTED BY GND CTL. THE RPTR WANTING TO ASSURE THAT HIS ACFT TAIL WAS CLR OF THE RWY AND NOT OBSERVING A TXWY HOLD SHORT LINE FOR THE INTERSECTING TXWY. ATCT GND CTL INTERVENED AND DIRECTED RPTR TO MAKE A 180 DEG TURN TO ALLOW A PIPER PA34 TO PASS THROUGH ON AN INTERSECTING TXWY.

Narrative: I WAS CLRED TO LAND RWY 35L DWH. ON ROLLOUT TWR SAID 'CLR RWY AT TXWY E, HOLD SHORT TXWY F, STAY WITH ME.' AS I WAS TURNING AT TXWY E, TWR SAID TO 'CONTACT GND CTL.' I TURNED AT TXWY E, MADE SURE I HAD CLRED THE RWY 35L 'HOLD SHORT' LINE OFF RWY 35L AT TXWY E AND TUNED IN ON THE RADIO, 121.8. I CONTACTED GND. THEY ASKED IF THERE WAS ROOM FOR A PA-34 TO GET BY ME ON TO TXWY F. I REALIZED THEN I HAD PULLED UP TOO CLOSE TO TXWY F. MY NOSE WAS ON THE EDGE OF IT AND THE PA-34 HAS A 40 FT WING SPAN! THE INTXN OF RWY 35L HOLD LINE AND TXWY F CAN NOT BE MORE THAN 40 FT. IN MY CONCERN TO CLR RWY 35L AND TUNING IN GND CTL, I HAD INADVERTENTLY MOVED UP 5 FT TOO FAR. THERE IS NO HOLD SHORT TXWY F LINE FROM TXWY E. IN SHORT, CONFINED AREAS SHOULD BE MARKED! GND CTL WAS A LITTLE UPSET WITH ME, REMINDING ME I WAS INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT TXWY F AND TOLD ME TO DO A '180 TURN' ON THE TXWY TO ALLOW TFC BY. I TOLD GND CTL I WAS SORRY BUT I WAS JUST MAKING SURE I WAS CLR OF RWY 35L. HE TOLD ME NEXT TIME TO 'LEAVE MY TAIL OVER THE HOLD SHORT LINE OF RWY 35L AT TXWY E AND THERE WOULD BE ENOUGH ROOM.' THIS IS A BAD SITUATION. A HOLD SHORT TXWY F SHOULD BE PAINTED. GND CTL AND TWR SHOULD COORDINATE LNDG AND CLRING TFC SO THAT IF SOMEONE CLRS THE RWY HOLD LINE BY 5 FT HE WILL NOT VIOLATE A HOLD SHORT CLRNC! CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATED THAT AFTER FURTHER REVIEW AND CONSIDERATION OF THE CLOSE PROXIMITY OF THE TXWYS TO THE RWY, IT PROBABLY WOULD NOT HELP TO HAVE A HOLD SHORT LINE ESTABLISHED AT THAT POINT. THE HOLD LINE WOULD HAVE TO BE SO CLOSE TO THE TXWY THAT EVEN SMALL ACFT, SUCH AS THE ONE HE WAS FLYING, WOULD OVERHANG THE RWY. HE FURTHER STATED THAT THE ARPT IS PRIVATELY OWNED AND OPERATED, AND IS BASICALLY USED BY GENERAL AVIATION ACFT. THERE IS NO ACR SVC USING THE ARPT. THEREFORE, IT DOES NOT GET ARPT 'ADAP' GOVERNMENT FUNDS. IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT THIS SUBJECT BE BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE ARPT TWR COORDINATING QUARTERLY USER MEETING AND THE FSDO LOCAL PLT SAFETY MEETING. IN CONCLUSION, IT WOULD SEEM BETTER TO CHANGE THE TWR PROC TO HOLD SHORT ACFT TO AN INTERSECTING TXWY, WHICH CAUSED THEM TO OVERHANG THE MAIN ACTIVE RWY, THAN TO ESTABLISH A HOLD SHORT LINE.
