Narrative:

While giving emergency procedures training (VFR flight into IMC -- simulated), I instructed the student pilot, during a no- gyros approach, to use 1/2 standard rate turns. In fact, we should have been using standard rate turns until instructed by the controller on final to use 1/2 standard rate. There was no traffic conflict, only confusion by the controller as to why we weren't turning enough. When queried by the controller, we did tell him we were making 1/2 standard rate. He advised us to use full standard rate and from that point on we did. As far as why I told the student to use 1/2 standard rate, I guess lack of currency on the maneuver. I should have reacquainted myself with the procedure before attempting to instruct it. I don't know why, but 1/2 standard rate stuck in my head on this procedure.
