Narrative:

Entering a long downwind at 800 ft above traffic pattern altitude, almost collided with aircraft taking off, departing the pattern. At least, I should have entered a shorter downwind at traffic pattern altitude. Best would have been 45 degrees or crosswind entry. Failure to properly enter pattern almost caused a midair. Other aircraft was a twin piper doing (I believe) closed pattern touch and goes.

Title: NMAC AT A NON TWR ARPT WHEN AN SMA SINGLE BARELY MISSED A TWIN PIPER ON DEP FROM THE TFC PATTERN. ACFT X HAD ENTERED A LONG DOWNWIND, 800 FT ABOVE THE TPA.

Narrative: ENTERING A LONG DOWNWIND AT 800 FT ABOVE TFC PATTERN ALT, ALMOST COLLIDED WITH ACFT TAKING OFF, DEPARTING THE PATTERN. AT LEAST, I SHOULD HAVE ENTERED A SHORTER DOWNWIND AT TFC PATTERN ALT. BEST WOULD HAVE BEEN 45 DEGS OR XWIND ENTRY. FAILURE TO PROPERLY ENTER PATTERN ALMOST CAUSED A MIDAIR. OTHER ACFT WAS A TWIN PIPER DOING (I BELIEVE) CLOSED PATTERN TOUCH AND GOES.
